Birding and Wildflower Walks

Wildflowers of the Sequoia Groves
Date:
Saturday - Sunday, June 28-29, 2008
Instructor:  Steve Stocking

Price:  $86 (member price: $75)

Study the flowering plants located between 5000’ and 7000’ in elevation. Easy to moderate nature walks will be taken to areas in and around the Sequoia groves in the Grant Grove, Redwood Canyon, and Converse Basin areas.  You will see the various orchids, lilies and a host of other wildflowers in the forests and meadows of these areas.  We will search for the ghost orchid and other unusual flowering plants.  Our main objective is to see and learn to recognize and appreciate those flowers which are more common, such as bride's bonnet, western azalea, snow plant, rein orchid and many others. Our goal is to recognize the wildflowers of the area and to learn some of the family characteristics which help in identification.  We will also consider the giant sequoias themselves, their characteristics and how they modify and provide the conditions in which the wildflowers occur. These will be two stunning days contrasting showy wildflowers and forests of cinnamon red barked sequoias!  Grab your camera, notebook, and be ready for beauty!   Includes Saturday evening wildflower slide show and potluck as well as plant list.  Bring something good to share, more details at first meeting.
Age range: 14 and up.

Note: By registering for a Sequoia Field Institute program, you acknowledge having read and accepted the Release and Waiver of Liability Form. Please note any comments in the "Comment/Suggestions" box when checking out.  Once we receive your payment, a confirmation and detailed itinerary will be mailed to you.
